#Qila-e-Kuhna Mosque at #PuranaQila. A beautiful rendition of Indo- Islamic architectural style, the mosque was built by Sher Shah in 1541. The single domed mosque has pointed arches in the shape of horseshoe seen extensively in the five doorways. Primarily called the ‘Jami Mosque’, the shrine was built for Friday prayers for the king himself and his courtiers. #NarwarFort - #MadhyaPradesh Perched on top of an irregular hill 500 feet above the town, Narwar Fort is 70 km south-west of #Gwalior in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. I have struggled to find much information regarding this fort, so almost all the information here will come from the Archaeological Survey of India Volume II 1864-65 by Alexander Cunningham. Clearly Narwar Fort is not visited very frequently if I’m having to rely on a document that is 155 years old ๐Ÿ™‚ The history of Narwar seems to extend back a very long time, all the way to mythology in fact. Traditionally said to have been the capital of Raja Nala from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, the town below the fort was called Nalapura until the 12th century. Archaeological evidence would seem to suggest that Narwar was ruled by the Naga rulers from 0 AD to 225 AD under a succession of nine Naga kings. Curiously, for the next eight centuries the archaeological record falls silent with no coins or inscriptions found in the area, although an inscription discovered at Eran may suggest that the region was ruled by the Toramana dynasty. Exactly how long the Toramana dynasty lasted is not known either, but we do know that from the 12th century onwards Narwar was held successively by Kachwaha, Parihar, and Tomar Rajputs (warrior caste) until its capture by the Mughals in the early 16th century. It was subsequently conquered by the Maratha Maharaja Scindia in the 19th century. #Leh Palace was built during the 17th century by the ruler King Sengge Namgyal. Its construction is on the same lines as the construction of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This palace had to be deserted by the royal family in the middle of the 19th century, because of the taking over of #Ladakh by Dogra forces. After this the royal family is living in-exile in the popular Stok Palace. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is restoring some of the ruined portions of this nine-storey palace. While the store rooms were on the lower floors, the royalty resided on the upper floors. The roof of this palace offers an excellent view of the valley. It served as the regal residence of the Namgyal dynasty until the mid 19th century, after which the royal family permanently shifted to Stok. In present times, the palace is the administrative office of the Archaeological Conservation Organisation that is owned by the Indian Government. This 9-storey royal edifice is almost in ruins now, but is preserved as a part of Ladakh's heritage. An example of medieval Tibetan architecture, it has massive walls and wooden balconies. A victory tower, built in the memory of Ladakhi soldiers, is present towards the top of the palace. Ancient mural paintings adorn the interiors of this palace and speak of its golden bygone era.
