Image
Kumbh Mela is one of the most ancient and glorious tradition of India. The world’s largest congregation of about 150 Million pilgrims (at a single location) is based on the astrological positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the Jupiter.  According to various Indian mythologies, it is believed that the sacred bath at the confluence of the rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati releases one from the sins of their birth and death cycle and brings the person one step closer to Moksha.  This gathering brings together the ascetics, saints, sadhus, aspirants-kalpavasis, pilgrims and visitors. The tent city is designed to accommodate all those who wish to stay away from the Kumbh Mela rituals and enjoy the Mela and witness India’s rich culture and heritage. by Famous Places in India via Tumblr http://bit.ly/2DnRq8D

Image
Located on the Northern end of the Kolkata Maidan the Glorious Dead Cenotaph is the most well known of the WWI Memorials of Kolkata. It is popularly but wrongly known as the “Memorial of Unknown Soldiers.” Built in 1924 the  Glorious Dead Cenotaph commemorates those Calcutta British and Anglo Indians who gave their lives for King and Country between 1914 and 1918. The Eastern side of the cenotaph bears the inscription “Glorious Dead” on the lower portion. Strangely the memorial contains no plaques with the names of those fallen and probably because of this the memorial is commonly known as the memorial of unknown soldiers. by Famous Places in India via Tumblr http://bit.ly/2DrMNuC

The Godavari Bridge or Kovvur-Rajahmundry Bridge is truss bridge spanning Godavari river in Rajahmundry, India. It is second of the three bridges that span the Godavari River at Rajahmundry. The Havelock Bridge being the earliest, was built in 1897, and having served its full utility, was decommissioned in 1997. The latest bridge is the Godavari Arch Bridge, a bowstring-girder bridge, built in 1997 and presently in service. The bridge is 4.2 kilometers (2.7 km Rail & 4.2 km Road) long. The bridge has a road deck over the single track rail deck, similar to the Grafton Bridge in New South Wales, Australia. This bridge, in addition to Godavari Arch Bridge, has been widely used to represent Rajahmundry in arts, media, and culture. It is one of the recognised symbols of Rajahmundry. by Famous Places in India via Tumblr http://bit.ly/2DtcdaX

Image
Mullick Ghat is a 130 year old flower market, the largest in Kolkata, and one of the biggest in Asia. Located right under the southeast end of the Howrah bridge, the market runs along the riverside. This market is an amazing sensory experience. You will be lost in the fragrance of the thousands of flowers, their colours and the bustle of the crowds that visit every morning when the fresh flowers arrive. If you’re into photography, this a great place to hang out with your camera. There are colours here suited for every frame and composition. If you’re going to catch the flower market at its peak, go early around 7 am. The light is just right to catch the vibrant colours on frame, plus all the sellers arrive around this time with their fresh stock. But the place is open throughout the day till late evening, and can be visited at any time. Early evening is also a great time to be here to catch the sunset on the riverfront. by Famous Places in ...
