Bhojpur Shiva Temple is one of the most amazing temple of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on the bank of river Betwa. The temple here was built by the Parmara ruler of Malwa, Raja Bhoj (1010-1055 CE). The King lived in his capital, Dhar and was a great patron of art, literature and science. Interestingly, according to folklore, he is also said to have founded the settlement of Bhopal, originally called Bhojpal. On the banks of this man-made lake, he commissioned a large Shiva temple, called the Bhojeshwar temple, with a massive shivling measuring 7.5 feet (2.3 m) in height and 17.8 feet (5.4 m) in circumference. It is set on a square platform, whose sides measure 21.5 feet (6.6 m).The total height of the lingam, including the platform is over 40 feet (12 m)! This makes it the tallest in the country.
